4 Video Edits You’re Forgetting To Do

Let's get straight to it. Here are some small edits that most people forget to add to their short-form videos. Whether it's on TikTok or Instagram, these will help you show up confidently on social media.

Remove the uhms, silences, and breaths.
The quicker your content comes across, the higher the attention span. When you have uhms and silences in your video, viewers can get distracted. By editing these out, you increase the likelihood that viewers won't scroll to the next video, which increases your watch time and increases the impressions/reach of the video. If you have silences that add to the video, one edit you can do is add in a zoom-in effect to keep the viewer entertained.

Add captions.
Yes, you can add captions to your videos on both IG and TikTok, but most people don't, and if they do, they choose the font that takes up half the screen. When adding text like captions, you want them to be an add-on, not the center of attention. Placing the captions in either the middle bottom half or the top right/left corner adds to the SEO and makes it accessible to everyone. As a reminder, the captions should be readable, so consider the placement so it’s not hidden behind the Reels formatting.

Is your post SEO-optimized?
SEO has been a trendy word thrown left and right on social media. SEO stands for search engine optimization. It's a fancy term for what a search engine (Google, Yahoo, Bing) categorizes your website under. Ex. What is your website about, and what keywords should we categorize you under? Similarly, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram rely heavily on categorizing your content based on what your video is about and keywords the algorithm picks up on when the video is posted. To keep your posts SEO-friendly, make sure each post uses words frequently describing the context. You can do this through your caption, in-video text, hashtags, and video concept. You'll even see people add words to the corner of the video to help add to the SEO.

Add Sound Effects.
You don't always have to have trending audio. When trends were popular, you would add the most popular song to your content, and it would help boost the impressions/reach. As social media culture has shifted, platforms like Instagram and TikTok have started prioritizing original audio. Adding sound effects to your original audio lets you control the narrative and keep the viewer entertained. Most editing applications do have free sound effects for you to play around and explore.
